Portfolio rebalancing is the process of realigning the weights of assets in a portfolio to restore the original or desired target allocation. Over time, assets with higher returns grow to represent a larger share of the portfolio, while underperforming assets shrink. Rebalancing sells some of the overweight assets and buys underweight ones to bring the portfolio back to its intended risk profile. It is a disciplined risk management practice, not a return-maximization strategy.
Without rebalancing, a portfolio's risk level can drift significantly from its intended level.
